Hindu Wedding - See the next 13 steps form the core of a Hindu wedding ceremony (while there are some other steps that are followed by different Hindu sects across India):

  • - Vara Satkaarah - Entrance gate of the wedding hall is the place for reception of the Hindu bride and Indian groom and his kinsmen. The officiating priest chants various mantras and the bride's mother blesses the groom with rice and trefoil and applies tilak of vermilion and turmeric powder.
  • - Madhuparka Ceremony - Indian bride and Hindi groom bestowing of presents by the bride's father at the altar.
  • - Kanya Dan - The father of the Hindu bride father gives away his daughter to the groom while chanting of sacred mantras.
  • - Vivah-Homa - The sacred fire ceremony ascertaining that all auspicious undertakings are begun in an atmosphere of purity and spirituality.
  • - Pani-Grahan - The Indian groom takes Hindu bride’s right hand in his left hand and accepts her as his lawfully wedded wife.
  • - Pratigna-Karan - The Hindi wedding couple walks round the fire. Indian bride is leading her Hindu groom. They take to each other vows of loyalty, love and life-long fidelity.
  • - Shila Arohan - The Hindu bride’s mother counsels her to prepare herself for a new life while assists her to step onto a stone slab.
  • - Laja-Homah - Sacred fire is offered puffed rice as by the bride, who is keeping the palms of her hands over the groom palms.
  • - Parikrama or Pradakshina or Mangal Fera - Sacred fire is circled seven times by the Hindu bride and Indian groom. This part of the ceremony has to legalize the marriage according to the Hindu Marriage Act as well custom.
  • - Saptapadi - Marriage knot is done by tying the Hindu groom's scarf with the Indian bride's dress. Then they take seven steps representing various believes as a nourishment, strength, prosperity, happiness, progeny, long life and harmony and understanding.
  • - Abhishek - Meditating on the sun and the pole star, and sprinkling of water.
  • - Anna Praashan - The wedding couple makes offerings in food into the fire. Couple then expresses mutual love and affection by feeding a morsel of food to each other.
  • - Aashirvadah - Benediction by the elders.
